2014 weekly menu: week 14

eggs benedict with homemade turkey sausage and a killer hollandaise from the humble bee cafe
some weeks i feel so uninspired to menu plan.  everything sounds "eh", nothing sound appetizing and the whole thought is daunting.  and some weeks the menu comes together just like that (insert finger snap.)

not sure if that's based on what i ate during the week, or even what i didn't eat that makes me crave it.  or i watched cooking shows or read through cookbooks (doing a little more of that these days). i feel like i could menu plan for the entire month.  using last weeks menu with lots of things i didn't make and still want to. the start of a new vegetable garden. reading about better eating. watching documentaries about food. that could go either way - either i don't want to eat anything ever cause it's all poison or it inspires me to cook healthy homemade food from scratch.

this week we have some events which means less days or less people eating together.  last week, with the kids on spring break, we ended up not eating at home as much as i anticipated and our schedule was out of whack.

let's see how it goes this week.

weekend eats
saturday: sushi at a new to us place - we loved it
sunday: mexican food at a new to us place - we loved it

making this week
monday: tortellini with sausage - from last week
tuesday: pizza
wednesday: sesame honey chicken, brown rice and green beans
thursday: eat out - swim meet, baseball game and school art show
friday: flounder milanese with arugula and tomatoes - from last week

and 1-2-3 this menu is done. (insert another finger snap).  have a good one.

our weekend in photos: a race and a shower

not the kind of shower you think of after a race (of course i took one of those too.)  i'm talking about a baby shower.

this weekend marked the halfway point in my training for the half marathon.  i'm feeling ready, but definitely need these next weeks of training to get me to the finish line.

since starting on this half marathon craziness 3 years ago i've been doing this 10k race in agoura.  it's a similar course to the solvang one.  and it's so beautiful.

the weather was perfect that morning.  overcast and fresh but not too cold. i met up with others from our group and we went up to the starting line.
this scene is getting comfortable for me.  but this was my first race since the half last may, so i was feeling a little anxious.  getting back into training after taking 8 months off has been difficult and frustrating.  talk about starting over.  but i felt strong.  i know this is a process and i'll keep working and getting stronger.
and then we were off.
i managed to get this shot in one of the prettiest sections of the course.  that's my sister-in-law in the middle.

it was challenging for sure.  two big hills toward the end of the race, one that i had to walk, and a steep downhill that hurt my knees.

i ran with energy and excitement.  i always run hoping to get a personal record (pr).  but i knew leading up to this race that i was running slower than last year.  like i said starting over sucks.  i kept reminding myself that this is where i am right now. i'm making improvements and doing much better then when i started in january.  and of course my trainer's voice pops in my head "you can't train desire." i finished 2 minutes slower than last year but 1 minute faster than the first time i did this race (and that year i ran a pr in the half.)

and no matter the time, crossing the finish line feels just as good amazing.
i grabbed my medal and some water... and bagels, pancakes, and pineapple juice.  everything tastes so good after you've given your all.
we met up again for some pictures and then it was time to go. huge congrats to debbie on her first 10k! you were awesome.  can't wait to see you after the half marathon.

as luck would have it, the next phase of my weekend took place in thousand oaks, just 10 minutes from agoura.

i was able to take a (real) shower at kenzi's family's house and get ready for the baby shower of our cousins jeff and kenzi.

this is their first baby and it's going to be a boy!  my kids can't wait to have a new baby cousin in the family.  they're suckers for adorable, sweet babies - but who isn't?

the shower was so sweet.
and the food was delicious.  a lot of our family favorites.

loved these pretty, easy and delicious fruit tarts that tara made.

the games were fun and there were lots of presents.
this beautiful quilt was handmade by my mother-in-law.
decorating diapers was a cute idea for guests.  too funny.

and the favors as guests left.

sofia and i stayed in t. o. with family even though it was close enough to go home. we weren't ready to say goodbye to aunts and cousins.
the girls got some swimming in before bed.

sunday morning we had breakfast at the hotel.
and spent time catching up, sharing photos and stories about running, marching band and life.
there may have been some shenanigans back in the room.
and lots of hugs before we said goodbye.

the baby is due around the time of my half marathon in santa ynez.  how cool would it be to run the race and then go to their house and meet the baby?

wishing you a good weekend.

2014 weekly menu: week 13

bbq chicken quesadillas
it's spring break for some of us this week.  which means sleeping in a little bit longer, and not running around as much.  i'm not sure i like that the breaks are not on the same week, but what can i do?  make the most of it.

yesterday the kids and i slept in, went grocery shopping, watched tv and played video games, cleaned out my email, and picked up jordan from swim.  not everyone is on break this week so they still have baseball practice and ccd.

and dinners still need to be made.

weekend eats
saturday: leftovers and chili's - dinner at the hotel after the baby shower
sunday: leftovers

making this week
monday: turkey paninis and salad
tuesday: eat out
wednesday: chicken tostada salad
thursday:  tortellini and sausage, garlic bread
friday: flounder milanese with arugula and tomatoes, orzo pasta - didn't make this last week

we have a few outings scheduled but for the most part we'll be home relaxing.

2014 weekly menu: week 11 & 12

the dessert table at nd's mother's guild meeting. i made creme de mente cookies.
last week was different. it was post birthday and i think i was overwhelmed from all of the fun and craziness of the weekend that i just didn't have time to sit at my computer and write.  my favorite quote was on monday when bobby texted me:

"is it possible to be hungover from an entire weekend without drinking?"

the answer was yes.

last week he worked late into the night, andrew had baseball, jordan had a swim meet and band practice.  i had a dinner at notre dame.  we went in 20 different directions.

what we ate last week
saturday:  cooking class and dinner with friends - one of the funnest nights in a long time with the best food!!
sunday: birthday dinner after sofia's performance - not quite what i anticipated but it was a long day
monday: asian glazed drumsticks, rice, broccoli (never made the previous week)
tuesday: kids had in n out with grandpa, i made dinner for our mother's guild
wednesday: chicken, salad, shells and cheese
thursday: school dine out at panda express
friday: pizza and salad

weekend eats
saturday: pizza at the mother-son bowling event
sunday: lemon chicken, hummus and rice from a mediterranean restaurant

and that brings us to this week

making this week
monday: bbq chicken quesadillas
tuesday: baked ziti, salad
wednesday: turkey burgers, kale chips
thursday: crock pot sesame chicken, rice and broccoli
friday: flounder milanese with arugula and tomatoes, orzo pasta

we had a wonderful weekend. busy on saturday and completely laid back yesterday.  i spent the day watching cooking shows and super soul sunday and read half of this book. this morning i took yoga and i'm feeling energized, with a great attitude. despite the jolt this morning it 's a great way to start the week.

this week i'm getting ready for a 10k on saturday, followed by a baby shower and andrew's first baseball game on sunday.  hoping to stay energized (and in a good mood) all week!

happy st. patrick's day.

this weekend i will celebrate another birthday.  it feels like it came all of a sudden. maybe it's because it's at the beginning of the month or because we have been so busy productive over the last few weeks that i haven't had any time to think about it.

but this past week i have given some thought about what i want for this coming year.  at the beginning of the week i thought this post was going to have a list of things that i want to do, experience, see and eat over the next 365 days.  but as i thought about it,  i realized that what i want from this year is more.

it's not about counting the books i read but about reading books that make me laugh, think, cry, connect, learn something.  if i read one book all year and it does all that i'll cross it off the list.

it's not about going to 10 new restaurants this year but about eating meals that blow my mind or make my tastebuds go "wow. i want more of that."

it's not about finishing my project life album or starting 5 creative projects but about recording more of our story with pictures and words and about being creative.  it can be on the blog, in an album or in a notebook.

when i blow out my candles on sunday, here's what i'll be wishing for:

more adventure
more laughter
more freedom
more productivity
more deep breathes
more peace
more confidence
more security
more knowledge
more space
more discovery
more experimenting
more silliness
more stillness
more care
more kisses
more love

looking forward to a great weekend.

around here: march 2014

sofia and i are making the most of having to stay at baseball practice for 2 hours.

thinking about spring break.  unfortunately the two schools are off on two different weeks.  but we'll make the most of it.

i am obsessed with rifle paper co.  didn't need these but i'm sure i'll find a use for them.  and i may have ordered this iPhone case.

we ate donuts and they were good.

working on a book report about walt disney.  this is a fun one. don't worry, she's doing all the work.  i'm just reading along.

enjoyed watching the academy awards this weekend with friends. we were late because of church but made it in time to see the big categories and eat some delicious food.  it's fun watching with people who know movies.  i have to catch up on the nominees but am so happy that 12 years a slave won best picture.  it was amazing.

the birthday celebrations have begun.  ate some cheesecake with friends that we miss. the kids played with legos, nerd guns and scooters and we caught up on travel, school and vacations.  always good to hang out with them.

jordan had his first concert on saturday at the hall of liberty in forest lawn.  the jazz band, symphonic band, concert band and wind ensemble played pieces they've been practicing this semester.  jordan played the snare, the bass and the xylophone.  and he rocked it!

the rain didn't stop me from running on saturday morning.  4 miles in mostly drizzle.

getting used to listening to pandora when i run instead of a playlist.  my favorite is the pink station if you don't mind explicit lyrics.

we loved the rain last week.  it gave me a reason to get out my rain boots and umbrella and splash a little in the puddles.

missed jordan's first swim meet yesterday but he came in first in the 50 fly and got a personal best in the 50 free.
enjoying smoothies made with bananas, strawberries, peanut butter and spinach.

thinking about lent and sacrifice and making these next 40 days count.

happy wednesday.

2014 menu: week 10

chicken pho - i think i was the only one that enjoyed this.
enjoying a day off for the young kids today.  this means i have to change up my monday schedule but i'm ok with that.  we're still in our pi's, relaxing and taking a breath.  feels good.

weekend eats
saturday: pizza and salad to celebrate my sister-in-law's birthday
sunday: oscar viewing party - all kinds of goodies

making this week
monday: turkey meatball spinach tortellini soup
tuesday: quick jambalaya
wednesday: panko crusted salmon, mashed potatoes, salad
thursday: asian glazed drumsticks, rice, broccoli
friday: veggie and cheese pizza - it's lent so no meat on fridays

this week we are getting ready for sofia's performance on sunday, finishing a book report, going to jordan's first swim meet, celebrating mardi gras, starting 40 days of lent, running, going to a cooking class, having teacher conferences and oh yeah, celebrating a birthday.

now you know why we are really enjoying the time off today.
