road trip 2010 :: a return to civilization and 100 degree weather

bobby wanted to take the trinity highway back down to sacramento.  it was such a beautiful drive along the trinity river.  we had a recommendation to stop for lunch at the straw house.  this little place is nestled right on the river and serves organic coffee, tea, sandwiches and baked goods.

as we drove the temperature began rising from the 50's into the 70's, 80's and 90's.  we started peeling off the layers of clothes in the car.  it took us about 4 hours to reach sacramento where the temperature topped off at 108.  we were so excited to stay with our friends for a few days.  the boys were so happy to have kids to play with.  and i was happy to sleep in a real bed.  we didn't really have plans but i had suggested going to the california state fair since it was happening while we were there.

bobby wasn't that interested in it (something about going with his family and staring at quilts all day when he was a kid) but in the end everyone found something to be excited about.

the boys rode the water boats. and got soaked.

we made sure to visit the california wine display and try a little something.

sofia got to take a spin on the carousel.

bobby made a friend.

i had some great photo opportunities.

and we all had some fudge.

it was really hot, so we decided to skip the fried fair food and go to downtown sacramento for a sit down meal.  oh and did i mention there were chips and salsa?

and to finish the day off we took the kids to the drive in.  that's right, movies, in the car.  it's been a while since we got to experience this fun way to see a movie.  we saw "despicable me" again and loved it again.  and the kids just thought it was very cool.

the next morning we packed up our things and headed into san francisco for the last few days of our trip.  everyone was pretty tired at this point but looking forward to the big city and a clam chowder bowl, oh wait, that was just me.
