road trip 2010 :: a dollhouse, a lighthouse, and a really old house

so as sad as we were to say goodbye to everyone and watch them drift down the river, we were excited to get going on our own adventure.  diana, sofia and i took a three hour trip to the coast of oregon.  we arrived at gold beach and to our home in turtle rock resort and rv park.

sofia quickly claimed this as her dollhouse.  it was so cute and little.  the second floor was the perfect size for the kids.  but bobby and i bumped our heads on more than one occasion.
sofia also loved that there was a tv in the loft.  and having the kitchen was convenient for coffee, breakfast and making sandwiches.   i thought we would be doing a lot of cooking but we ended up eating out for a lot of our meals.

after settling in and unpacking we drove into town and got some dinner at the port hole cafe.

it was so nice having this time with diana.  sofia always wanted to sit next to her.  and we talked about weddings and cooking and girly stuff.

that night after the nice meal, a shower and getting cozy in front of the tv with a glass of wine, we both agreed that we missed the guys but were happy to have the comforts of home.

the next morning we went to port orford to see the lighthouse.  d has a love for lighthouses.  and now i do too.  we took the tour and learned all about how this particular house worked. it was a full time job, cleaning, keeping watch, cleaning, communicating, logging, refueling and cleaning.  we even took the 64 stair climb into the actual light area.  it was so pretty, but not sure i could spend all day there.  sofia did so well and was very careful even though we were standing 2 feet from the glass.

after the lighthouse, we went on a tour of the Hughes house.  a victorian house owned by an irish dairy farmer in the late 1800's.  d and i both love vintage things.  and i love stories about life back then.  we walked around and admired the hard work of running a farm like this.  the amount of cooking and cleaning that the women had to do to care for their families and farm hands was overwhelming.  it made me feel like a wimp.

then we went to this little area to have a picnic.

it  was really fun hanging out together, doing the things that we wanted to do and having some girl time. we picked up a pizza for dinner, went to the bookstore and got cozy in our pajamas.  the next phase of our trip is taking the jet boat up the river to meet everyone. one more good night's sleep was what we needed.

in other news: missing the kids who are spending some time with tom and sue.  they picked them up on saturday so bobby and i could get some things done around the house before school begins.  it's actually kind of exciting but a lot of work.  we are rearranging rooms and doing some redecorating.  that implies that there was decorating to redo, which there is not.  but it is overwhelming because we are doing all three rooms at the same time.  yikes.  the kids will enjoy going to disneyland and getting spoiled for a few days.  can't wait to see them on wednesday.
