tuesday: minestrone soup, french bread (will share the recipe)
wednesday:  shrimp lettuce wraps, chicken shu mai, rice
thursday: taco salad

i am thinking these pops would be fun to make with the kids this week.  although the weather looks mild with possible rain in the forecast.

looking forward to trying a new grocery store today.  i can't wait to see what i discover. also looking forward to some basketball tonight, jordan getting his braces off, a baby shower, some crafting and cleaning.

hooray for hollywood

Source

a few months ago i was invited, via facebook, to a paramount page reunion in hollywood.  at first i thought no way.  i'm not going.  would anyone remember me?  would i remember anyone?  but then i realized how important that time in my life was and what this job really meant to me and it made me want to go.

the back story
{oh i wish i had pictures to share from this time.  they are hiding in a box somewhere.}

after graduating from cal state northridge, my film degree in my hand, i took a job at the school of business as a clerical assistant.  it was a great gig, full time with benefits, close to home.  i survived the earthquake there and made friends that i loved.  i considered it taking a breath from being a student and a pause before pushing my way into the world of movie making.

it was there that one of the counselors gave me a tip that the page program at paramount studios was hiring.  i went in, with a very short resume and a positive attitude.  i sat through an informal interview, and told them i was getting married in a month.  as long as i could be there for the two weeks of training it was all good.  i got my polyester uniform and i.d. and off i went.

being a page at paramount meant i gave studio tours.  i have to apologize to anyone who was on my tours because i was a terrible tour guide.  i couldn't remember names, dates or tv shows.  i made a lot of it up.  i created diversion and stories, that's what it's all about.  i think i was pretty boring.  but when half of your tour only cares about seeing the star trek set and the other half doesn't understand english i guess it wasn't a bad way to spend 2 hours.

pages also worked the audience seating for the tv show tapings of frasier, sister sister and the leeza gibbons talk show.  now this i could do.  and i was good at it.  "how many in your party?".  "yes, it takes 4 hours to film a 30 minute tv show.", "sorry we are full.  please don't yell at me. it's just a tv show!"  we dealt with a lot of vip guests, sororities and fraternities, and well, drug rehab centers.  they were people who know people, people who needed the money and people looking for something to do.

the best part of the job was being a temp pool for the studio.  pages would fill in wherever needed.  in the scoring stage, in consumer products, as the secretary for the president of the studio.  it was the best part of the job.  and it led to other opportunities - for those that made the most of it.  i was hired on a tv show, i worked in the legal department, i was asked to fill in again for the president and then i ultimately got a job in facilities and operations.

bobby was also a page.  he was a way better tour guide than me.  we think back at that time as our honeymoon stage.  we had a tiny apartment filled with love, movies, and lots of time.  we were also broke.  two people working a part time gig at $6/hour doesn't get you very far.  but we survived.  our blue and gray uniforms hanging in the closet side by side. we traded war stories and shifts.  he did the tours, i worked the shows.   it was the perfect match.

so we both went to the reunion not really knowing what to expect.  the event was held at off-vine in hollywood.  it was packed with pages, mostly from the original class.  we met up with some friends.  met new friends.  shared stories and gave updates on our lives.  i remembered things i never thought i would.

we saw page movies that each class made.  our class did one parodying forrest gump which was the big movie when we were working there.  i even made an appearance in the video.  can't wait to get a copy of that.

i got to catch up with my boss who took me to dreamworks.  he is a wonderful person who i respect and admired during the time we worked together.  he trusted me and we worked as a great team, always looking out for each other.

i shared a lot with these friends. spending hours and hours together. i started working as a page right after our honeymoon.  so they knew me as a newlywed, just starting out on my own.  this job made me get over many fears.  hollywood can be a scary place filled with weirdos and star struck fans. and you truly have to put yourself out there if you want to get ahead.

this job also fulfilled that desire i had to work in the movie business.  it was exciting to walk on the lot everyday.  even if we weren't treated like movie stars.  i got to go to  work premieres and special events.  i got to eat from the craft services table.  salmon and roasted potatoes was a huge perk for us. and the highlight of my work day. i "met" kelsey grammer and denzel washington.  i passed by tom cruise's office everyday.  and the history on the lot, some great classic movies and tv shows.  things we learned about in class.  it was amazing.  and i never took any of that for granted.

i always had in mind that i was paying my dues, putting in my time.  i knew i had a lot to learn and i wasn't in a hurry to move on.  i was there to be a tour guide and i was honest about that.  i took every task seriously.  i was hard on myself.  but i proved something to them and to myself.  work hard and good things happen to you.  it wasn't always fun but it was worth it.  i miss working on the lot.  i haven't been back in over 15 years.  i still have friends who are there.  i should invite myself over for lunch.

walking through the lot i had dreams of making movies.  writing. seeing my name up on the big screen.  that never happened for me. honestly, i never really thought it would.  but it's happening for bobby.

back then i never imagines that years from now my life would look like this.  but even with the glitz and glamour of hollywood this is the life i was meant to live.

summer cocktail: strawberry lemonade sparkler

this one is good.  real good.
we made it yesterday for our 4th of july bbq.
we had raspberry vodka for some and i used real strawberries and regular vodka for the others.
they were delicious and so easy to make.
i found a recipe online that used strawberry vodka, lemon juice and simple syrup but i went the easy route and used lemonade instead.
strawberry lemonade sparkler - adapted from here
2 fresh strawberries - cut up and crushed
2 oz vodka
lemonade
sparkling wine
mint and lemon peel for garnish
put crushed strawberries in a glass.  add vodka and stir together.  add lemonade, then top with sparkling wine. fill glass with ice.  garnish with strawberries, lemon peel and mint leaf.
you can add sparkling water instead of wine.  for the raspberry ones i still added the strawberries but it would have been great with raspberries.

we spent the 4th with my parents, swimming, playing cards and watching fireworks from their front lawn.  hope yours was happy and safe.

checking in on 2012 goals

“The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own. No apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on, or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.”

-Bob Moawad

like i mentioned yesterday we are 1/2 way through the year.  what a better time to check in with the goals i set at the beginning of the year.  i feel like i am constantly trying to be better, follow through and live happy.

i went through each of my goals and here's where i stand:

1.  read more:  eh.  it's going ok.  i read the first two hunger games books. but then stalled.  i am currently reading the happiness project.  reading it month by month.  i have 2 books on my list now: the creative habit by twyla tharp will arrive on friday via amazon. and a few people recommended gone girl by gillian flynn.  i am number 722 on the library wait list with only 55 copies circulating so i may have to get it for the kindle instead.  i realize that i just don't make the time to read.  if i set aside 30 minutes everyday i'm sure i could get through more books, and would probably end up reading longer than 30 minutes.

2. put things in order:  another hard one.  straightening up is one thing, keeping things straight is a whole other story.  in a house of five people who use five different things and then don't put them back, things are left on the counter, floor or table and soon there are 20 things hanging around.  so the rule is you take it out, you put it back.  papers, papers, papers.  it's never-ending.  but it can be organized.  and it's not that hard.  it goes with #5, just deal with it right away. it's a work in progress.

3.  challenge myself physically: finally, something i can completely check off the list.  done that.  felt good.  and i want to continue to challenge myself.  my body has changed as a result of this goal and i don't ever want to go back.  i feel good about myself, and want to feel better. so what's next?  a new challenge.  another 1/2 marathon is likely in the fall.  i'm hoping to maintain my running in the summer at least a few days a week.  also need to do some strength training.

4. explore creative avenues:  i finished the scarf.  but it took me a while so i won't get to wear it until the weather gets colder.  hoping to sew a simple skirt for the summer.  and looking forward to getting messy with paint on a few projects.

5. deal with stuff right away:  another difficult habit to break.  honestly, it's about facing my fear, not letting the stack get too big, making that phone call, letting things go.  it takes some bravery, putting on my big girl pants and just doing it.  another work in progress.  a lot of room for improvement.  one of the motivators will be my role as pto president in the fall.  you can't let things go too long without dealing with them.  organization is key.  be on top of it before it's too late.  communicate. that will be the true test.

6. grow my blog: this is the goal i think about most often.  i've been debating starting fresh.  keeping this my personal blog and starting a new one that i can send out to the bigger world.  it's tough  figuring it all out; what to write about, what is my niche, who is my reader.  i would love to have a blog like her.  only i'm 15 years older and i have 3 kids and i don't have has as much energy or gumption as she does. the wheels are constantly turning.

new goals:
choose happiness: i have learned so much about happiness over the last six months.  mainly that it is a choice. there are many times this is not easy.  i get into a mood and i kind of like it there.  but not really.  so i choose to be happy.  think positive.  it works.  most of the time.  laugh more.  be present.  feel happy in my soul.

take risks: i am definitely a play it safe kind of girl.  my comfort zone is safe and cozy.  we tell the kids all the time, try it, take a chance.  see if you like it.  it's time i start doing the same.  don't set limits on myself.  don't think i can't if i haven't even tried. be honest.  seek new adventures.  don't be lazy. don't take the easy way out. but be ok with it not working out.  the reward is so much better than the regret.

there it is.  lots to do over the next six months.

weekly menu: week 27

this week we officially start the second half of 2012.  crazy huh?

a recap of last week:
i only made one of the dinners from my menu last week.
i tried to make homemade bread. and it was a disaster.
i wanted to write a couple of blog posts but i stared at my computer with no words.
my patience was low and my creativity was even lower.

on the other hand:
jordan's team won their basketball game on saturday.
we went to the dodger game with friends.
the kids and i went to the farmer's market. we only bought kettle corn.
i ran 3.5 miles on saturday with my sister-in-law.
i had a great time hanging out with the family at a bridal shower yesterday.

in the end, it's all good. and another great week is ahead.  the holiday is right in the middle of the week and bobby has extra days off.   this could change things for dinner.  we'll see.
