travelogue: nola

it's been on my bucket list for a while.  to visit new orleans.  when i worked in theatrical distribution at dreamworks, new orleans was one of my territories. i grew to love this place just from talking to people over the phone. my boss was from louisiana and i adored him.  kind, generous, happy.  i imagined that everyone who lived in this lively city would be like that.  i quit that job just a few weeks before a planned work trip. but i knew i would see it someday.

and the day came.  bobby's aunt and cousin invited us along for her bucket list/birthday trip to the big easy.  with the kids settled in at school and my less hectic days, how could i say no? and believe me i tried.

sue and i met at lax early friday morning and we were on our way.  i mentioned this already but i read the amy poehler book on the 3 hour flight there and 3:30 hour flight back and laughed and thought and enjoyed myself.  took some of the anxiety away of being away from the fam.

we landed, took the shuttle and met the other ladies at the french market inn.

funny story - we took a walking city tour on friday night and our tour guide asked us where we were staying.  when we said the historic french market inn he said "my mama used to joke that the only historic thing about that hotel was the towels."

i loved this place.  the rooms were a nice size, we had a great view of the mississippi river and it was centrally located away from the noise but close enough to walk everywhere.  and we did walk everywhere.

that night we took a city tour that took us to see architecture and listen to the history of the city.  it was the perfect way to get acquainted with this place and learn about all of the cultures that make up new orleans.

we saw a second line for a wedding - the first of many we would see throughout the trip.

i don't think i would bring the kids here on vacation - too grown up for them.  but i do wish jordan could see and hear the music that floods this city at all times during the day.  it is kind of magical.

then the grown ups went to bed and the "young" ladies went to bourbon street. wow!  we literally walked into a wild time.  dancing, drinking, bead throwing, music, street performers. an overall party atmosphere.

i didn't know what to think at first but then i just went with it.  and when i found out they threw beads to anyone, not just those willing to expose themselves, that became a fun activity.

so hey, welcome to new orleans.

the next day we were up bright and early to go to the swamps.  we had booked an air boat tour to see the alligators.

and we did, sort of.  it was an overcast day so the gators were hiding under water.  but our guide was able to frustrate one out of his usual hiding spot.  he hissed and snapped at us from under a tree limb. and yes, the boat full of women screamed.

he also brought out his pet alligator, dollar, that he keeps on board his boat.  and yes, the boat full of women screamed.   but then we got over it and each took a turn holding it.

he was softer than i had imagined and actually quite cute - for an alligator.

but what was most impressive was how beautiful it was here.  picturesque, peaceful and inspirational. i could have stayed here the entire day.

this was one of those things i didn't know i wanted to do, but was so happy we did. a definite highlight of the trip.

that night we also took the grown ups to bourbon street. you can imagine the horror and delight.

sunday the saints were playing at the superdome (in fact our flight in was filled with 49ers fans). everywhere we looked we saw drew brees jerseys. we stayed away from the craziness of a home game but everyone in town was watching.

instead we booked a voodoo cemetery tour.  again something i never would have imagined i'd do but it's a must.

our guide, n'awlins nate, was fantastic and a wealth of knowledge.  i have to admit that he scared me at first but then i was captivated by his stories. he had us thinking and trying to keep up with him. i loved the way he spoke even though i couldn't understand every word. turns out he's not the usual guide but was filling in at the last minute - lucky us.

we visited historic spots like this one; a laundromat that was once a recording studio for fats domino, ray charles and little richard.

we saw the home and the tombstone of the original voodoo queen and learned about the history of voodoo, hoodoo and shoedoo. don't fall for the shoedoo!

on monday we headed out to the garden district and did a self guided walking tour of the homes.  oh man, i could live here.  the homes here are ridiculous.

large and charming.  it was fun to walk around the area and imagine life here back in the day.

this sign cracked me up.

that night melissa and i took one last stroll down bourbon street to see the performers and get more beads.

now i know what you're thinking.  you never ate while you were in new orleans? you poor thing. au contraire mon ami, we never stopped eating.  but that's a post for tomorrow.

comme ci, comme ca.

2014 weekly menu #49

this pumpkin cheesecake was so pretty and delicious.
so starts the season of lots of eating and celebration.  we had a relaxing thanksgiving in paso robles with bobby's family and especially loved hanging out with baby aiden.  the pies were yummy but that pumpkin cheesecake (a last minute addition) was the hit of the dinner - well that and the sausage stuffing.  i'll be making it again for sure this holiday season.

december is off and running.  our christmas tree is up, house is decorated, christmas music is playing everywhere, we've had our share of chestnut praline lattes, christmas cards are ordered, we are making our christmas wish lists and the calendar is full.  it's going to be a merry month.

weekend eats
saturday: mexican food (it's becoming a weekend tradition necessity around here)
sunday: homemade pizza to celebrate bobby's birthday - i made 8 pizzas!

making this week
monday: salmon, hummus and goat cheese salad - bobby's request
tuesday: chicken tortilla soup - perfect for this rainy weather
wednesday: entomatadas, rice
thursday: turkey lettuce wraps, fried rice
friday: chicken pesto panini, salad

hope your december is off to a good start.  i'm really hoping to post more often this month.  i have my december book that i want to share, lots of weekend photos and the new orleans trip.  i've decided not to post a link on Facebook every time so just remember to stop by once in a while to see what i'm up to.

happy monday

this is not a monday like any other monday.
it's the monday after an incredibly happy week and weekend.
it's the monday the kids all go back to school and we go back to work.
it's the monday that rings in the month of december and holiday celebration.
it's the monday we start eating healthy again.
but it's also something very special.

this monday is his birthday.
and i'm not sure what it is about this year but i feel like this birthday is a big deal.
he worked hard this year and saw success.
he had visions that became (or are becoming) a reality.
he learned some hard lessons but gained a lot of confidence.
he taught me to learn from the tough moments and move on - always move on.
he supported our family, financially and emotionally and we are so grateful.
his strength grew - thanks to the gym and his generous heart.
he kept his priorities a priority.
he restored his camaro and reignited an old hobby.
he played baseball with andrew,
and softball with sofia.
he drove band trucks and sold concessions for jordan's band.
he went to water polo and football games.
he was the kids' biggest fan.
he put up pop ups and movie screens, gave speeches and lead the way for our school.
he walked through the difficult times holding my hand.
he made us laugh and cry (while we were laughing).
he did things that mattered
and let go of things that didn't.
he stood up for us.
he has always been the greatest man i've ever known but this year he was even greater.

b,
happy birthday.
i love you.
b

2014 weekly menu #48

made chicken posole instead of pork last week.
our busy weekends are over and now we get a little break through the holidays.  jordan took a practice sat test on saturday morning and there was a broken water line on our street that gave us a chance to hang out at my parents house for the morning.  sunday was sofia's team party, andrew had a get together with his friends and jordan went to a sweet 16 party. it sounds busy but overall it was a quiet 2 days.

this is going to be a great week.  no school for jordan, generations day tomorrow at the youngers' school and then the rest of the week off to celebrate thanksgiving and hang out with family.  bring on the turkey.

bobby is making pies again this year; pumpkin, apple and maybe a pumpkin cheesecake.  bring on the pie.

some things | 11.21

some thing to make | cafe du monde's cafe au lait.  i brought back some coffee from new orleans and want to brew a pot this weekend with some steamed milk. hopefully bobby can get a taste of the famous street cafe.  i also brought back some beignet mix and we may fry some up as well.  i'll need to buy a lot of powdered sugar first.

some thing to share | speaking of new orleans i have a ton of photos to share and am working on a blog post with some details of what we did.  of course i have lots of food photos as well.  will get them posted next week if you're interested in checking that out.

some thing to listen to | anyone else obsessed with the serial podcast?  it's fascinating.  i've been listening to it while i do things on the computer or around the house or in the car on the way to pick up the kids and i am hooked.  i have a serial page in my daily notebook where i take notes of names and situations so i can keep it all straight. i'm only on episode 5 so please no spoilers.

some thing to read | while i was in new orleans, actually just on the plane ride to and from, i read yes please by amy poehler and i loved it.  it's funny and touching, hysterical and emotional, light but insightful.  it made me want to watch old snl skits as she talked about what was going on in her life during that time.  i was sitting in my row on the airplane reading this and i wanted to laugh out loud at one point but had to keep it to myself.  great, and very fast read.

some thing to purchase | the super cute starbucks mugs.  i bought one for my sister in law's birthday and one for me.  they make great gifts.  you can even add a starbucks gift card with it.  and while you're there try the chestnut praline latte - non fat and no whip to cut calories. yummy!

some thing i'm working on | finishing up my some mini albums so i can get started on my december daily album.  this is one project that i have done for the past few years and love!  i'll share this year's in december.

some thing to inspire | "The one thing that you have that nobody else has is you. Your voice, your mind, your story, your vision. So write and draw and build and play and dance and live as only you can." Neil Gaiman

have a great weekend!

2014 weekly menu #47

muffuletta from the napoleon house in new orleans
let's all take a collective sigh of relief.

{sigh}

this weekend marked the end of so many fall activities for our family. football and water polo seasons are over, boohoo but yay! jordan had his last band revue on saturday. sofia had her last softball game on sunday. and andrew attended his first high school open house on sunday afternoon.  jordan has no practices of any kind this week. and there are no school or sports activities for the kids this week.

{sigh}

last week i returned from new orleans and we survived on leftovers, quick meals and some take out.  this week my goal is to get reorganized around the house so we can enjoy the upcoming holiday season.  that means putting laundry away, coordinating our calendars, cleaning out the pantry and fridge and stocking up on holiday baking and cooking items.

{sigh}

weekend eats
saturday: sushi
sunday: mexican food

making this week
monday: pork posole
tuesday: school dine out at sharkey's
wednesday: pizza
thursday: birthday dinner with family
friday: maple glazed salmon, couscous, grilled vegetables

this week will be the calm before the storm and i'm looking forward to every minute of it.

homemade caramel apples for halloween

glad we made it through last week with minor incident. the week was a blur to me. on top of all of the craziness of halloween i also participated in ali's week in the life project.  that means i documented our adventures last week through pictures. and now i have to organize and print them all.  but more on that later.

this week i'll take a huge breather.  not that there isn't a lot scheduled, it's just the end of this busy season for us.

for now, it's all about fall menus.  soup, stews, and comfort food.

weekend eats
saturday: hot dogs at the rose bowl
sunday: salmon burgers

making this week
monday: turkey meatball and vegetable soup, bread
tuesday: taco truck after the water polo game
wednesday: creamy mascarpone and spinach linguine, green beans
thursday: pizza
friday: last home football game of the year

wishing you lots of deep breathes this week.
